Hearing God: Distinguishing the Source

As human beings, we are vessels and souls that can be filled with anything. We are often more impressionable than we realize. This is the beauty of humanity. When we are filled with God, we truly reflect His love and are empowered to be positive forces of change in the world. We can be filled with grace and love, which is the most powerful indwelling. Yet we can also be filled with fear and our motives can easily become distorted. Nobody comes out of the womb hating. Rather we come out dependent and in need. We emerge needing love and care. How we come into this world inherently mirrors a larger truth–the dependency of human beings on a power and source higher than ourselves.

The Bible teaches that since the creation of the world, all human beings have an inherent understanding that there is a God, and He is manifest in them. It is obvious just by looking at creation. Moreover, human beings are described as clay jars. Everybody has the ability to hear God. However, because we are ultimately vessels that are filled and formed, we can be lead by direction other than God.

Nevertheless, hurt, tragedy, grief, pain, and even pleasure are universal elements of the human experience. Yet, there’s a window where something else, more subtle and even seemingly reasonable, comes in and colors these experiences. Our pain can make us hardened, and our pleasure can numb us to the pain around us. The source that we are lead by determines how we see ourselves, other people, and God. It determines how we make choices, and the fruit of our choices over time. See Genesis 3.

1 Corinthians 2 teaches us that there are different levels of experiencing creation. Some people experience it solely at the natural plane–governed by their senses and desires. Yet, it’s also possible to be lead by God’s spirit, which helps you get to the truth of matters. However, Ephesians 6 also notes that our eternal conflict is not against people, but forces that we cannot see. In 2 Corinthians 4, where the Bible teaches that we are vessels that can be filled, it also reveals that there is a darker power in this world, and it’s main mode of operation is spiritual blindness. However, that’s just the baseline. What happens when you become spiritually sensitive, and can’t discern leadings from God versus leadings of the enemy? Or you confuse the voice of your emotions for the Holy Spirit?

I want believers to understand that in this age, deception will increase on all fronts–personally, relationally, systemically. Jesus prophesied this in Matthew 24. It is important to be able to distinguish the voice of God, versus the voice of the enemy–especially when pressure is involved. The table I have created carves out the different characteristics of the God-head, which are God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It also delineates the difference between our human nature, demonic patterns, and satanic ideologies–which is in essence on a spectrum.
